Privacy Policy
How we handle your information at Owlwo Meals. Your preferences and interaction history are yours, and we treat them accordingly.
1. Who controls your data
The controller of your personal data is Marco Patiño (Owlwo Meals), based in Mexico, and privacy email hello@owlwoapp.com. This policy applies to the Owlwo Meals mobile app and website (owlwomeals.com).
2. What data we process
- Identity and account: your email address, your name or display name, and optionally a profile image.
- Interaction data and preferences: your swipe history (like, dislike, skip) on catalog recipes, recipes you save as favorites, and any rating or preference you express in the app. This data is the input for the recommendation engine.
- Authentication data: sign-in credentials (passwords, where applicable, are stored hashed — never in plain text), passkeys, and sessions (including IP address and browser/device information) to keep your session secure.
- Technical and usage data: IP address, device type and operating system, and, in the app, an installation identifier and — if you enable notifications — a device token to deliver them.
- Usage data and product analytics: app usage events (for example, screens viewed, swipes, recipes opened, and conversions) that we process — directly or through a product-analytics provider — to understand and improve the service. We seek to minimize and aggregate them where possible.
- Communications: messages you send us for support.
Payments. Purchases are processed through Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), depending on the platform. We do not receive or store your card details; the relevant store only tells us your subscription status.
Third-party content (recipes). The recipe catalog comes from external public sources. We do not collect personal data from recipe authors; we only store each recipe's public content and source URL.
3. How we use your data
Primary purposes (necessary to provide the service):
- create and manage your account, and authenticate you (including sending magic links);
- store your interaction history and show you personalized recipe suggestions;
- operate AI features to categorize the catalog and personalize your experience (see Section 4);
- provide support and send you important service notices;
- bill your subscription through Apple or Google Play where applicable, and prevent fraud and abuse;
- comply with legal obligations.
Secondary purposes (not necessary; you may object without affecting the service):
- improve and develop Owlwo Meals using internal, aggregate usage metrics.
If you do not want us to process your data for secondary purposes, write to hello@owlwoapp.com.
4. AI features and your data
Owlwo Meals uses third-party artificial intelligence in two contexts. The provider may change: today we use the OpenAI and/or Anthropic APIs, and we may replace them with an equivalent provider.
- Catalog categorization (internal process). When we process and index recipes, we send the AI provider the recipe text to obtain tags and categories (dish type, main ingredient, estimated time, etc.). No personal data of yours is sent in this process — only the public recipe text.
- AI assistant and suggestions (paid feature). When you use the assistant, to answer you we send the AI provider the context needed, which may include your preferences, the catalog recipes you've liked, disliked, or saved, your saved meals or recipes, your current plan, and the content of your messages. We do not send your credentials or passkeys.
Under our AI providers' API terms, the content we send through the API is not used to train their models. The assistant only proposes; no change to your data happens without your confirmation.
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with providers that help us operate the service ("subprocessors"), which process it under our instructions and their own terms:
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI and/or Anthropic | AI features: catalog categorization and the suggestion assistant | Public recipe text; when you use the assistant, the context of your request (no credentials) |
| Apple / Google (app store) | App distribution, billing (in-app purchase), and notifications | Subscription status; notification token |
| Google AdMob | Ads (non-personalized) in the free tier | Limited device data (IP, device type, advertising identifier) to serve and measure ads |
| PostHog (product analytics) | Understand product usage (funnels, retention) | Usage events and a user or session identifier |
| Firebase / Google Analytics (optional) | Ad-revenue attribution and app events | App events and identifiers |
| Resend | Transactional email (magic links) | Your email and the sign-in link |
| Hosting provider Vultr (Mexico City) | Servers and database | All of your data, at rest |
| Google Fonts (web) | Site typography | Your IP when fonts load |
We may also disclose data when required by law or to protect rights, security, or the integrity of the service.
6. International transfers
Some of our providers and servers are located outside Mexico, including in the United States. By using Owlwo Meals, you understand that your data may be transferred to and processed in those countries for the purposes described. We seek to ensure these transfers have appropriate safeguards under applicable law.
7. Cookies, local storage, and advertising
On the web and for your session we use the bare minimum:
- an essential session cookie (
better-auth.session_token) to keep you securely signed in; - local storage on your device to remember preferences such as the visual theme.
On the website we use no advertising cookies and no third-party advertising trackers, and we do not sell user profiles. To understand usage we use privacy-respecting product analytics (e.g., PostHog), preferring aggregate or pseudonymous data where possible.
Advertising in the free tier
The app's free tier shows ads; the paid tier removes them. Today we show non-personalized (contextual) ads through Google AdMob. To serve and measure those ads, the network may process limited device data (such as IP address, device type, and an advertising identifier). For now, we do not share your interaction history or preferences with advertisers to build profiles or for cross-app or cross-site behavioral advertising.
Personalized ads (future). We plan to offer personalized ads later on to support the free tier. When we do, we will update this notice and, where the law or platform rules require it (for example, Apple's App Tracking Transparency or applicable data-protection law), we will request your consent through the appropriate mechanism. If you keep using Owlwo Meals after we publish the updated notice, you are deemed to accept the notice then in effect; that does not replace any specific consent we may ask for to personalize ads, and you can always change your mind and withdraw that consent.
8. Data retention
We keep your data while your account is active and for as long as necessary for the purposes in this policy or to comply with the law. When you request account deletion, we delete or anonymize your personal data within a reasonable period (30 days), except what we must keep for legal reasons or to resolve disputes. Your swipe history and saved favorites are deleted with the account.
Paid-feature content. Some features are part of the paid tier, such as uploading your own recipes with photos and the meal planner or calendar. If you cancel your paid subscription, you keep access to the free features, but content tied to paid features (your own recipes and photos, and your calendar plans) may be removed from the paid surfaces after a 60-day grace period from cancellation. We recommend exporting or backing up that content before the grace period ends, as it may be permanently deleted afterward.
9. Security
We apply reasonable measures: encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), encrypted storage of credentials, passkey support, and access controls. No measure is foolproof; please protect your email and device and notify us of any unauthorized use at hello@owlwoapp.com.
10. Your privacy rights
You have the right to access your data, correct it if inaccurate, delete it, and object to its processing, as well as to withdraw your consent and limit the use or disclosure of your data (in Mexico, these are the "ARCO" rights).
To exercise them, write to hello@owlwoapp.com with your request and information that lets us identify you and locate your data. We respond within the time the law requires. Exercising these rights is free.
Some of these actions you can take directly in the app (for example, deleting your account, editing your profile, or clearing your preference history). In Mexico, if you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the INAI.
11. US & California rights
If you are a US resident, you may have rights under your state's privacy law (for example, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended). These include the right to:
- know what personal information we collect and how we use it (described above);
- access and obtain a copy of your personal information;
- correct inaccurate personal information;
- delete your personal information;
- opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information and of targeted advertising.
We do not currently sell or share your personal information for money or for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not currently use it for targeted advertising. If this changes (for example, when we introduce personalized ads), we will notify you and offer you the ability to opt out. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. To make a request, write to hello@owlwoapp.com; you may use an authorized agent, and we will verify your request as the law allows. If you are in another region (for example, the EU/UK), you may have similar rights, which we honor on the same basis.
12. Children
Owlwo Meals is intended for people 13 and older. Users between 13 and 17 must have parental or guardian consent. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a minor provided us data without the required consent, write to us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will post the current version with its date and, when changes are material, notify you in the app or by email.
